When the traffic light turns green, this means you may start driving. There's a good chance you'll do this too, often without paying further attention. Only "green is right of way" is a big misconception in traffic.
To be able to obtain a driver's license, you're required to take an exam twice. In the first instance, it concerns a theoretical exam that will test whether you have sufficient knowledge to be able to go on the public road with a vehicle. When you've passed the theoretical driving exam, you can then work toward the practical variant. In this case, it's the skills you have to drive a car that are checked. Both exams are taken in one of the various GOCA exam centers. These are spread across Belgium, so you usually don't have to travel long distances.
When we look at the list of GOCA exam centers in detail, we see that these are found at favorable and moreover central locations. GOCA exam centers are found, among others, in the cities of Ostend, Bruges, Roeselare, Wevelgem, Eeklo, Sint-Niklaas, Kontich, Geel, Bree and Anderlecht. There are of course many more locations where GOCA exam centers are found. Wherever in Flanders you may live, there's always a nearby exam center where you can take both exams for your driver's license. This applies by the way not only in Flanders, but also on the Walloon side. Here too, a large number of GOCA exam centers are found that are spread across Walloon territory.
The first time you'll have to visit the GOCA exam center will relate to taking your theoretical driving exam. You're asked various questions where you can choose from multiple answers. You've passed at the moment you manage to get at least 41 out of 50. After the theoretical driving exam, a short eye test is also performed, after which a brochure is given with all information regarding the practical driving exam and when you can take it. Note, the theoretical exam you've taken is only valid for 3 years.
Have you taken your theoretical driving exam at one of the GOCA exam centers, but didn't pass? In that case, you can try a second time. If you also don't manage to get sufficient points the second time, you're required to take 12 hours of theory lessons at a recognized driving school. Only when you've received these lessons can you make a new attempt. Have you passed after this entire course? Then you can also look to the future and start working on the practical aspect of obtaining the driver's license.
When you've passed the theoretical driving exam at one of the GOCA exam centers, you get a provisional driver's license which is valid for a period of 18 or 36 months. The validity of the provisional driver's license is determined based on whether you choose to drive with or without a supervisor. If you've met the applicable conditions, it's time to visit one of the GOCA exam centers again. During the practical driving exam, you must be able to demonstrate various things. For example, you must prove that you can park, but you'll also have to perform a certain maneuver and it's looked at how you drive in different circumstances. When you've passed all aspects, you're handed a document with which you can apply for your definitive driver's license at the town hall.
